Saint-Elzéar Church

The église de Saint-Elzéar, classified in 1960, is a place of worship of the Catholic tradition erected from 1852 to 1854. This stone building has a Latin-cross plan consisting of a single-aisle nave, a transept and a projecting choir with a flat east end. Its Neoclassical-inspired façade includes three portals. It is surmounted by a bell tower, which crowns the ridge of the straight-pitched gable roof, and by two lateral bellcotes set at each end of the gable. The sacristy is attached to the east end, in line with the choir. Rectangular and one and a half storeys high, it is topped by a straight-pitched gable roof. The church is located on a natural promontory at the heart of the village core of Saint-Elzéar. It is part of a religious complex formed by a presbytery, a cemetery and a statue of the Sacred Heart.

Nine works of art associated with this church have been classified.

The heritage value of the église de Saint-Elzéar lies in its architectural interest. The place of worship, built from 1852 to 1854, is a good example of 19th-century rural stone churches. These took up the model widespread during the French Regime but were generally larger and had a greater number of openings on the façade. Moreover, most of them included elements inspired by Neoclassicism, a trend then in vogue in Québec. Probably erected according to plans by Charles Baillairgé (1826-1906), the église de Saint-Elzéar shows its kinship with the churches of the French Regime through its Latin-cross plan, its façade bell tower and its elevations. Its façade reflects the Neoclassical influence through its three segmental-arched portals, its round-arched openings and its oculus. The sacristy occupies a building attached to the apse, a practice that appeared at the end of the 18th century and that moved this space, until then set behind a partition in the choir. Furthermore, the église de Saint-Elzéar is one of the oldest churches in the Beauce.

The heritage value of the église de Saint-Elzéar also lies in the interest of its interior decor. It bears witness to the Neoclassical aesthetic of the Baillairgés, which characterizes several 19th-century churches. Executed essentially between 1855 and 1860 by Pierre Fortier and Léandre Parent (circa 1809-1899), it reflects this influence through its rigour and classical order, seen notably in the segmental vault punctuated by transverse arches and in the choir retable treated in the manner of a triumphal arch. The pulpit and the backpieces of the churchwardens’ pew and of the baptismal font are also representative of the Baillairgé aesthetic. At the end of the 19th century, works were added from, among others, the École de sculpture de Saint-Romuald. The workshops belonging to this school, active for more than a century, acquired a great reputation that even extended beyond Québec. In 1895, the side altars were executed by the sculptor Ferdinand Villeneuve (1831-1909), founder of the oldest of these workshops. Furthermore, the Roman-style altar tomb of the high altar, carved in 1803 and 1804 for the church of Saint-Henri de Lévis, is typical of the production of the atelier des Écores. The église de Saint-Elzéar also contains works of art of interest, including a painting from the workshop of the Soeurs du Bon-Pasteur de Québec and two canvases attributed to Antoine Plamondon (1804-1895).

The heritage value of the église de Saint-Elzéar also lies in its interest in the landscape. Distinctive components of the rural Québec landscape, churches form landmarks that signal the presence of the parish. They are the dominant features of Catholic complexes, which are true village cores. Located on a natural promontory, the église de Saint-Elzéar is part of a typical complex consisting of a presbytery, a cemetery and a statue of the Sacred Heart.
