Saint-Cyrille Presbytery

The Saint-Cyrille presbytery, a cited historic monument, is a priest’s house erected in 1893. The square-plan, two-storey wooden building is covered by a pavilion roof. A full-width gallery wraps around three of its sides. A square-plan, two-storey annex stands at the rear. The Saint-Cyrille presbytery is located within an institutional complex, in the municipality of Saint-Cyrille-de-Wendover.

The heritage value of the Saint-Cyrille presbytery lies in its architectural interest. The presbytery is representative of the cubic house, a type of residential architecture commonly called the “Four Square House” in the United States. It was introduced in Québec at the turn of the 20th century. It was widely disseminated through architectural catalogues and quickly became very popular throughout North America. With its simple, very spacious volume, this type of building is easy and affordable to construct. The cubic house is very plain compared with the Victorian-style residences built at the end of the 19th century. It appeared at a time when domestic architecture was becoming industrialized with the arrival on the market of less expensive prefabricated materials and components offered by catalogue. The Saint-Cyrille presbytery is characteristic of this type of residential architecture through its square plan, its main entrance topped by a gable, its clapboard siding, its two storeys, its pavilion roof and its covered gallery added in 1908. This type of residential architecture was widely used for the construction of presbyteries in Québec during the first half of the 20th century.

The heritage value of the Saint-Cyrille presbytery also lies in its representativeness of this type of building with a religious function. The presbytery is the residence of the parish priest, an influential and respected figure who represents the Church in the parish. The priest’s house therefore had to be spacious, functional and prestigious. The presbytery combines institutional and residential functions. It has public spaces on the ground floor for receiving parishioners. During their annual visit, members of the episcopate occupied bedrooms on the upper floor. A separate space was sometimes reserved for servants.
