Saint-Cyprien Presbytery
The Saint-Cyprien presbytery, a cited historic monument, is a Second Empire-influenced religious residence built in 1899. This square, two-storey priest’s house is topped by a four-sided mansard roof. A covered gallery surrounds the building on two sides. The presbytery stands on landscaped grounds in the heart of the municipality of Saint-Cyprien.
The heritage value of the Saint-Cyprien presbytery lies in its architectural interest. The building bears witness to the influence of the Second Empire style on Québec vernacular residential architecture. This style, which affected both residential and institutional architecture in the last third of the 19th century, emerged under the reign of Napoleon III in France. It incorporates elements of French Renaissance architecture and borrowings from so-called classical architecture. This new style quickly spread to the United States, from where it was introduced into Canada. In Québec, the influence of the Second Empire style was felt in every region, in rural and urban areas alike. The mansard roof of the Saint-Cyprien presbytery, the symmetrical composition of its façade and certain ornamental elements, such as the large central dormer topped by a triangular pediment and framed by classical pilasters, make it a fine example of the influence of the Second Empire style in small rural communities. The monumentality of the style, like the values of permanence, stability and dignity it conveys, were particularly suited to the image to be associated with the presbytery. This building is the residence of the parish priest, but also the geographic and administrative centre of the Catholic parish.
The heritage value of the Saint-Cyprien presbytery also lies in its historical interest. The presbytery evokes the beginnings of Saint-Cyprien. In 1862, the first pioneers settled in the territory of the present municipality. The village developed slowly, its economy relying essentially on subsistence farming and on the exploitation of forest resources. The small settlement of Saint-Cyprien-de-Hocquart was raised to the rank of municipality in 1882, while the Catholic parish of Saint-Cyprien was erected in 1886. The presbytery, built in 1899, is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Saint-Cyprien. Its position in the heart of the village bears witness to the settlement of the area by an essentially Catholic population.
