Saint-Cuthbert Presbytery

The Saint-Cuthbert presbytery, a classified historic monument, is a Neoclassical-inspired religious residence built in 1876. The almost cubic main body, two and a half storeys high, is topped by a gable roof and is distinguished by the elaborate, highly raised gallery that surrounds it. Together with the church, the cemetery, the former convent and the former college, the building forms a Catholic institutional ensemble. Located in the heart of the village core of the municipality of Saint-Cuthbert, the presbytery is altogether exceptional in the rural landscape of the Lanaudière region.

The heritage value of the Saint-Cuthbert presbytery lies in its architectural interest. It stands out for its main floor raised well above the ground and surrounded by an imposing gallery. Finely crafted, the gallery is crowned on the façade by a triangular pediment that highlights the main entrance, reached by a majestic staircase. The influence of the Neoclassical style, in vogue in Québec since the beginning of the 19th century, can be seen, among other things, in the symmetry and regularity of the openings and in the borrowing of certain exterior and interior decorative elements from the classical vocabulary: the gallery’s cornice and dentilled frieze, and the triangular pediments. The interior layout and decoration reflect the function of each level. The main floor, which houses the priest’s apartments, the reception room and the office of the parish council (fabrique), stands out for its height, the size and brightness of its rooms and its decorative elements. The attic storey, reserved for the bedrooms of the curates and visitors, is plainer, as is the lower level, which once housed the kitchen, the dining room and the housekeeper’s quarters and now serves as a community hall.

The heritage value of the Saint-Cuthbert presbytery also lies in the renown of the architects who designed its plans, Victor Bourgeau (1809-1888) and his partner Étienne-Alcibiade Leprohon (1842-1902). The duo’s renown stems mainly from Bourgeau, famous in the Montréal region for his many religious buildings (churches, chapels, presbyteries, convents). The Saint-Cuthbert presbytery bears witness to the mastery of these architects, who succeeded in giving unity to the ensemble formed by the presbytery and the neighbouring church, built from 1874 to 1879 and also designed by them.

The heritage value of the Saint-Cuthbert presbytery also lies in its architectural and functional integrity. Since its construction in 1876, the building has always served as a presbytery. Moreover, apart from a few modifications to the decoration of the gallery, it has retained its original architectural elements and interior layout.
