Saint-André Parish Core Heritage Site

The heritage site of the parish core of Saint-André, constituted in 2004, is an institutional, residential and commercial ensemble developed from 1805 onward. It includes the church of Saint-André, a classified historic monument, the presbytery, the cemetery, the former inhabitants’ hall, the former sisters’ convent, the old school, the caisse populaire, a store and five residences. The designation also includes the land on which the buildings stand, as well as the monument to Christ the King, the Sacred Heart monument and a commemorative plaque of the church of Saint-André. Erected from 1805 to 1811, this stone place of worship, rectangular in plan, without a transept and with a choir narrower than the nave, ends in a semicircular apse. It is topped with a straight-pitched roof. An L-shaped sacristy is attached to the church and a covered lean-to passage connects them. The presbytery has a rectangular plan, a two-storey elevation and a hip roof. The cemetery, laid out behind the church, consists of gently sloping land surrounded by trees and dotted with funerary monuments and a calvary. The old school, two storeys high and topped with a hip roof, is characterized by its frontispiece and its bell-cote. Also rectangular in plan, the former convent is topped with a mansard roof, and two superimposed covered galleries run along three of its facades. The other buildings have a rectangular plan and a straight-pitched gable roof or one with flared eaves. The parish core forms the heart of the village of the municipality of Saint-André. It is crossed by the main street and located on the shore of the St. Lawrence River.

The heritage value of the heritage site of the parish core of Saint-André lies in its historical interest and its age. Its formation spans the 19th and 20th centuries. The first wooden chapel was blessed in 1790, at the same time as the cemetery. The parish of Saint-André was canonically erected in 1791, while the present church of Saint-André was built between 1805 and 1811. It is the oldest church in the Bas-Saint-Laurent and one of the thirty oldest in Québec. Other buildings were gradually added around it. A first presbytery was added in 1851, while the public hall faced it from 1866. Twenty years later, a convent was established next to the presbytery. The public school, for its part, was built on the other side of the street in 1937. In the second half of the 1950s, the old presbytery was demolished following the construction of a new one. In 1977, the caisse populaire, founded sixty-five years earlier, moved into a new building near the former public school. As the heart of the municipality, residences were added to the ensemble over the years. The heritage site of the parish core of Saint-André recalls the development and evolution of the village.

The heritage value of the heritage site of the parish core of Saint-André also lies in its architectural interest. Its buildings reflect the various trends that have influenced institutional and residential architecture since the beginning of the 19th century. The stone church, built from 1805 to 1811, has a Recollet plan, defined by a rectangular nave without a transept, a narrower choir and a semicircular apse. The inhabitants’ hall dates from 1866 and takes up the elements of 19th-century residential architecture. It is characterized by a rectangular plan, a one-and-a-half-storey elevation and a gable roof with slightly flared eaves. Most of the residences in the ensemble are inspired by this model while featuring different ornaments and materials, as well as later adaptations. The former convent, built in 1886, reflects the influence of the Second Empire style through its imposing volume, its mansard roof and its long covered galleries. Dating from 1937, the school has a rectangular plan, a hip roof and a frontispiece topped with a pediment and a bell-cote. The buildings of the heritage site of the parish core of Saint-André recall the periods of transformation of the ensemble.

The heritage value of the heritage site of the parish core of Saint-André also lies in its landscape interest. It is laid out in a linear fashion along the shore of the St. Lawrence River, on raised land dotted with mature trees, notably elms. The ensemble is visible from a good distance across the surrounding farmland. Made up of religious structures such as the church, the presbytery, the cemetery, the former convent and religious monuments, it brings together institutions essential to a village of the period. Buildings, mainly community and residential, are strung along rue Principale and complete the site. The parish core is still the heart of the municipality of Saint-André today. The heritage site of the parish core of Saint-André is representative of 19th-century institutional ensembles in rural Québec.
