Sacré-Coeur Presbytery
The Sacré-Coeur presbytery, a classified historic monument, is a former Château-style parish priest’s residence erected in 1918 and 1919. The U-shaped, two-and-a-half-storey brick building is topped by a straight-sided gable roof. The central section, which has a wide porch with pointed arcades, is framed by wings forming projecting sections. One annex is located at the side, while another, at the rear, connects the building to the church, also a classified historic monument. The presbytery is located on a rocky promontory near the rivière Chicoutimi, in the Bassin district, a former working-class sector of the Chicoutimi borough of the city of Saguenay.
The Sacré-Coeur presbytery is included in the Sacré-Coeur historic site.
The heritage value of the Sacré-Coeur presbytery lies in its historical interest. The building bears witness to the presence and work of the Eudists in the Côte-Nord region and in Chicoutimi. This congregation, founded in France in 1643, went into exile in Québec in 1903 to escape anticlericalism. It was given charge of the Apostolic Prefecture of the Gulf of St. Lawrence and was entrusted with Sacré-Coeur parish, erected in 1903. The parish served essentially workers living near the Pulperie de Chicoutimi, in the Bassin district. Immediately upon their arrival, the Eudists had the church built. They were welcomed at the bishop’s palace, then lived in various places. In 1904, they acquired a small hotel located at the foot of the hill on which the church stands and lived there until the construction of the presbytery in 1918 and 1919. The community remained in charge of the apostolic prefecture, which became an apostolic vicariate, until 1945, and responsible for Sacré-Coeur parish until 1996.
The heritage value of the Sacré-Coeur presbytery also lies in its architectural interest. The presbytery is representative of the bourgeois houses of the first half of the 20th century. Built to plans by the architect Alfred Lamontagne (1883-1967), it stands out in the landscape through its imposing size and its Château-style architectural treatment. The massive two-and-a-half-storey main body, with a steel structure and brick cladding, has a stone foundation. Its steeply pitched roof is pierced with ornamented gabled dormers and topped by wrought-iron ridge cresting. The facade has a regular and orderly composition. The central section, which has a wide porch with pointed arcades, is framed by wings forming projecting sections. In addition, the building is distinguished by interesting architectural details and by its glazed annex designed as a solarium. Rivalling the bourgeois residences of the same period, the Sacré-Coeur presbytery, built also to house the community’s provincial house and the seat of the Apostolic Vicariate of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, illustrates the importance of the Eudists in Chicoutimi and on the Côte-Nord.
The heritage value of the Sacré-Coeur presbytery also lies in the interest of its interior. It is distinguished by its quality and elegance. Millwork elements in British Columbia fir adorn the ground-floor rooms in particular, such as the stair balustrade, the doors, the door casings, the baseboards and the panels at the base of the glazed partitions. The exposed structure, including joists and secondary joists, is clad in wood. In addition, some doors, windows and transoms are enhanced with stained glass. Through its rich interior decor, the presbytery illustrates the Eudists’ desire to make their presence felt in their community.
The heritage value of the Sacré-Coeur presbytery further lies in its siting. The building stands on a rocky promontory called the Cran Chaud, near the rivière Chicoutimi. Included in the Sacré-Coeur historic site, it overlooks the Bassin district.
