Sacré-Coeur Monument

The Sacré-Coeur monument, a cited historic monument, is a religious monument erected in 1916. The life-size gilded statue depicts Christ with arms raised, bearing the symbol of the Sacred Heart on his chest. It rests on a granite pedestal set on a plinth, itself raised on a square three-step base. The inscription “Que votre règne arrive” (Thy kingdom come) appears on the front of the pedestal. The Sacré-Coeur monument stands on the lawn in front of the church, also a cited historic monument, in the municipality of Saint-Éphrem-de-Beauce.

The heritage value of the Sacré-Coeur monument lies in its ethnological interest. The Saint-Éphrem-de-Beauce monument bears witness to devotion to the Sacred Heart, a religious practice once very widespread in Québec. The Sacred Heart of Jesus is the symbol of the immense charity that moves the Saviour. Its cult was developed in the 17th century in France. It was practised in New France at the same time, notably by Marie de l’Incarnation (Marie Guyart, 1599-1672). This devotion nevertheless gained greater importance in France after the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871). The country placed its recovery under the aegis of the Sacred Heart. In its wake, a basilica dedicated to the Sacred Heart was soon erected on the butte Montmartre in Paris. In Québec, the cult of the Sacred Heart intensified through the intervention of Cardinal Elzéar-Alexandre Taschereau (1820-1898), who placed the ecclesiastical province of Québec under its protection around 1875. This devotion grew stronger when Pope Leo XIII (1810-1903) officially consecrated the human race to it on June 11, 1899. The name “Sacré-Coeur” proliferated in Québec toponymy at that time. A significant body of art also developed around this theme. The iconography of the Sacred Heart comes in several variants. Sometimes reduced to a simple flaming or radiant heart, the Sacred Heart is, however, more often represented in the person of Christ, as a bust or full-length figure. In every case, though, he bears a heart on his chest. The Saint-Éphrem-de-Beauce monument bears witness to this devotion, which continued well into the 20th century.

The heritage value of the Sacré-Coeur monument also lies in its historical interest. The parish of Saint-Éphrem-de-Beauce was canonically erected in 1866. It was officially consecrated to the Sacred Heart on August 15, 1915. The following year, a monument attesting to this consecration was erected. It was blessed on June 20, 1916, by Cardinal Louis-Nazaire Bégin (1840-1925), during the solemn ceremonies marking the fiftieth anniversary of the parish’s founding. Through this gesture, the citizens prayed for the end of the First World War and for the protection of the soldiers from the locality. In fact, no one from Saint-Éphrem died during the two world wars.
