Sacré-Coeur Heritage Site
The Sacré-Coeur heritage site, constituted in 2004, is a Catholic institutional complex developed from the end of the 19th century. It includes the Sacré-Coeur church, the presbytery and its shed-garage, the old cemetery, the Sacré-Coeur monument and a commemorative monument. The church, built from 1909 to 1911, has a rectangular plan consisting of a single-aisle nave and a narrower projecting choir ending in a canted apse. Its façade includes a central bell tower topped by a spire. The presbytery, set back from the church, was built in 1913. With a rectangular plan two and a half storeys high, the building is topped by a gable roof with straight slopes. It has a central projecting bay and a large rear annex, and is encircled by a covered veranda. A shed-garage stands behind the presbytery. The old cemetery, laid out from 1887, is located east of the church. The Sacré-Coeur monument, erected in 1922, stands in front of the church. Finally, the Hommage aux missionnaires de Sacré-Coeur monument, erected in 2000, stands west of the church. The institutional complex is located on an open lot bordering the main street, in the municipality of Sacré-Coeur.
The heritage value of the Sacré-Coeur heritage site lies in its historical interest. It bears witness to the history of the municipality of Sacré-Coeur. Settlement began in the early 1840s at Rivière-Sainte-Marguerite, a hamlet near the mouth of the rivière Sainte-Marguerite. From 1862, an overland link was established with Tadoussac. Over the following decades, many families took advantage of it to settle on the fertile land of the Sacré-Coeur plateau. The development of the locality increased when William Price (1867-1924) opened major logging operations on the rivière Sainte-Marguerite in 1885. These were to supply his paper mills in the area. In 1869, a first chapel was built; it was replaced in 1885 by a new place of worship. When it became too small, it was replaced by the present Sacré-Coeur church, built between 1909 and 1911. This church is one of the first monumental buildings on the Côte-Nord. The Sacré-Coeur heritage site bears witness to the importance of the municipality of Sacré-Coeur, which is considered one of the most important agricultural villages on the Côte-Nord.
The heritage value of the site also lies in the architectural interest of the Sacré-Coeur church. It was built between 1909 and 1911 to plans by a renowned architect, Joseph-Pierre Ouellet (1871-1959). Ouellet’s architectural output consists of churches, presbyteries and also civic and conventual buildings, built throughout Québec. The Sacré-Coeur church is characteristic of the architect’s early churches, notably through its rectangular plan, canted chevet and central bell tower. The church also bears strong formal similarities to the church of Saint-Paul-de-la-Croix (1907-1909), in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region, also designed by Ouellet. Through its size and quality materials, such as its rock-faced stone facing and its Canadian-style sheet-metal roofing, the Sacré-Coeur church is an exceptional place of worship in colonization territory.
The heritage value of the site further lies in its importance in the landscape. In Québec, churches form the heart of the village core; the Sacré-Coeur church is the main element of a particularly interesting religious ensemble. Besides the church, it consists of an old cemetery used from 1887 to 1957, a presbytery and an outbuilding built in 1913, a Sacré-Coeur monument erected in 1922 and a commemorative monument erected in 2000. The ensemble is also located near the former Notre-Dame convent (1946), used as a community hall, and two schools (1956 and 1961).
