Roland-Morin House
Roland-Morin House, a cited historic monument, is a rural dwelling built at the turn of the 20th century. This rectangular, one-and-a-half-storey house is capped with a straight-pitched gable roof whose front slope is pierced by a large gabled wall dormer. An annex is set at right angles behind the main block. Roland-Morin House is located in the heart of the municipality of Courcelles.
The heritage value of Roland-Morin House lies in its architectural interest. This house is representative of the straight-pitched-roof cottage, a type common in Québec during the second half of the 19th century. This vernacular dwelling model belongs to the Neoclassical architectural movement. It is characterized by its rectangular, one-and-a-half-storey volume, the organization of its architectural elements and its straight-pitched gable roof. From the 19th-century Neoclassical tradition, this type of dwelling retains the symmetry of the façade composition, which usually has a central door flanked by windows on either side. Roland-Morin House is characteristic of the straight-pitched-roof cottage through its rectangular, one-and-a-half-storey volume, the symmetry of its composition, its straight-pitched gable roof and its restrained decor. Roland-Morin House nevertheless has a distinctive feature, its large gabled wall dormer on the façade. This detail is a variant of the straight-pitched-roof cottage. This type of dormer is very widespread in the Cantons-de-l’Est. It is an element of the Gothic Revival architecture of the second half of the 19th century.
The heritage value of Roland-Morin House further lies in its age. It is a rare witness to the beginnings of the municipality of Courcelles. The first known land grant in the territory of Courcelles dates from 1851. However, it was in 1865 that Pierre Morin found on the rivière aux Bluets a site suitable for harnessing water power. He settled there and built a first mill. It was demolished and rebuilt a little farther away in 1888. In 1894, a railway line passing near the mill, a station and a freight shed were built. These facilities led to the development of a small settlement that would become the municipality of Courcelles. Roland-Morin House, built at the turn of the 20th century, is thus one of the oldest in this municipality.
Maison Roland-Morin
