Roberge House

The Roberge House, classified in 1968, is a French-inspired residence probably built in the 18th century. It was enlarged twice, first around the turn of the 19th century and then around 1850. The stone dwelling, rectangular in plan and one and a half storeys high, is covered by a steep, straight-sloped gable roof pierced in the centre by a chimney stack. The Roberge House is set well back from the road, on farmland, in the municipality of Saint-François-de-l’Île-d’Orléans.

The Roberge House is included in the Île-d’Orléans historic district.

The heritage value of the Roberge House lies in its architectural interest. The dwelling is representative of the French-inspired rural house. This type derives from French models and know-how, adapted to particular local conditions such as climate and the availability of materials. The Roberge House was probably built in the 18th century. It was enlarged on the east side at the end of the 18th century or the beginning of the following century, then on the west side around 1850. It is an example of French-inspired domestic architecture in a rural setting through its low stone masonry main body, its low clearance above the ground, its steep, straight-sloped gable roof covered with cedar shingles, and the small number and asymmetrical arrangement of its openings. In addition, the chimney stack, which ended up at the centre of the ridge following the enlargements, is a feature frequently found in Québec City and the surrounding regions.
