Rideau Canal Memorial Cross
This memorial Celtic cross is dedicated to the workers and their famillies who died while building the Rideau Canal. It was constructed after the War of 1812 on fears of an American invasion of the St. Lawrence River, it served as an alternative shipping route between Montreal and Kingston.
The granite celtic cross has five engraved symbols:
centre – an Irish harp to symbolize the nationality of most of the workers
top – a pick and shovel to symbolize to tools used in the construction of the canal
right – a mosquito to symbolize the ever-present bug
bottom – a wheel barrow, another tool used in the construction
left – an explosion to symbolize the use of explosives during the construction.

Croix commémorative du Canal-Rideau
Ce mémorial en croix celtique est dédié au ouvriers et leur familles qui sont mort durant la construction du Rideau. Construite après la guerre de 1812, par crainte d’une invasion américaine sur le fleuve Saint-Laurent, elle a servi de voie navigable de rechange entre Montréal et Kingston.
La croix celtique de granit porte les cinq symboles gravés suivants :
au centre – une harpe irlandaise symbolisant la nationalité de la majorité des travailleurs
au haut – un pic et une pelle symbolisant les outils utilisés pour la construction du canal
à droite – un moustique symbolisant ces bestioles omniprésentes
au bas – une brouette, autre outil utilisé dans la construction
à gauche – une explosion symbolisant l’utilisation d’explosifs durant la construction.
