Rémi-Rinfret-Dit-Malouin House
Rémi-Rinfret-Dit-Malouin House, classified in 1967, is an urban residence built in 1830. This rectangular, three-and-a-half-storey stone dwelling is topped with a straight-pitched gable roof pierced with dormers. A firewall extends beyond the roof on the west side. This house, which adjoins other buildings, is located along a commercial street in the upper town, in the La Cité borough, in the heart of the historic district of Québec. A site listed in the Inventaire des sites archéologiques du Québec is associated with the property.
The heritage value of Rémi-Rinfret-Dit-Malouin House lies in its architectural interest. Built in 1830, this building belongs to the tradition of the French-inspired urban house, influenced by the ordinances of the intendants of New France, particularly with regard to fire protection, and incorporates Neoclassical contributions. The French tradition takes shape in, among other things, the stone masonry, the straight-pitched gable roof and the firewall that extends beyond the roof and includes an imposing chimney. The Neoclassical influence is reflected in the symmetrically arranged openings and in the top storey treated as an attic. The house includes elements of the vaulted cellars of the previous dwelling, dating from 1746. With its ground-floor shop windows, it bears witness to the commercial function of rue Saint-Jean, which dates back to the end of the 18th century.
The heritage value of the house also lies in its association with Rémi Rinfret dit Malouin (1789-circa 1857), a member of a dynasty of masons who practised in Québec for a century. Rémi Rinfret dit Malouin was a contractor and master mason, like several of his relatives, including his grandfather Jean-Baptiste (died 1758) and his father Pierre-François (1754-1819), with whom he worked until the latter’s death. Over the course of his career, he carried out masonry work on several houses in the upper town and the faubourg Saint-Jean-Baptiste. For a time, he worked in partnership with his brother Édouard (1803-after 1846), mason and plasterer, and Étienne Dumont, mason. Indeed, it was these craftsmen who built his house in 1830. Following the death of Rémi Rinfret dit Malouin, the residence remained the property of his descendants until 1900.
Maison Rémi-Rinfret-Dit-Malouin
