Rang Cinq-Chicots Schoolhouse

The Rang Cinq-Chicots schoolhouse, a cited historic monument, is a former rural school comprising a classroom and living quarters, built in 1903. The rectangular-plan wooden building rises one and a half storeys on a relatively high base and is covered by a gable roof with straight slopes. Behind this main block, two small volumes following the slope of the land are arranged in a row. Surrounded by conifers and shrubs, the Rang Cinq-Chicots schoolhouse is located in a farming area, in the municipality of Saint-Christophe-d’Arthabaska.

The heritage value of the Rang Cinq-Chicots schoolhouse lies in its historical interest. It recalls an educational practice of nearly 150 years in Québec. Rural range schools (écoles de rang) were found throughout rural Québec from 1829 to 1964. During this period, pupils of all ages in rural areas were often grouped in a single classroom, as was the case at the Rang Cinq-Chicots schoolhouse, and shared the instruction of a single schoolmistress. She therefore had the heavy task of teaching seven grades. Very often, the schoolmistress lived in quarters set up in the school building and was responsible for its upkeep. The Rang Cinq-Chicots schoolhouse was built in 1903 and used until 1959. Until the 1950s, a schoolmistress had to live there during the week, from September to June. The Rang Cinq-Chicots schoolhouse is a tangible witness to the school history of the municipality of Saint-Christophe-d’Arthabaska.

The heritage value of the Rang Cinq-Chicots schoolhouse lies in its representativeness of the architecture of Québec rural schools built between 1899 and 1964. During this period, Québec’s Department of Public Instruction established layout criteria for country schools and supplied plans and specifications to school boards. Range schools are characterized by the presence of outbuildings, a shed and sometimes a bedroom and kitchen for the schoolmistress. The Rang Cinq-Chicots schoolhouse belongs to the so-called “tailed” model (“à queue”), owing to the series of connecting annexes at the rear, which served as a woodshed and latrines. These were added in 1917. Finally, range schools borrowed heavily from the construction methods of traditional rural dwellings. They differ from them mainly in the number and arrangement of openings. Thus, the main block of the Rang Cinq-Chicots schoolhouse is made of a light frame covered with wooden clapboard and is topped by a gable roof with straight slopes. The main façade is a gable wall, and a brick chimney pierces the ridge of the roof. Three large-paned windows are set on each side to light the classroom. Thanks to its cornice returns and moulded wooden casings, the school has a slightly sophisticated air. Its good state of preservation makes it an exceptional example in its category.
