Quai-de-Grande-Baie Heritage Site

The Quai-de-Grande-Baie Heritage Site, constituted in 1991, is a port facility built in 1903. The site comprises the concrete wharf and the adjacent shoreline land. It is located on the shore of the baie des Ha! Ha!, at the north end of rue Saint-Pascal, in the Grande Baie sector. It is part of the La Baie borough, in the city of Saguenay.

The heritage value of the Quai-de-Grande-Baie site lies in its historical interest. It bears witness to the importance of marine transportation in the baie des Ha! Ha! since the mid-19th century, as well as to the importance of the forest industry in the region’s development. Marine transportation was favoured by the depth of the bay’s waters, the shelter it offers from bad weather and its ease of access for ships. It was not until the last quarter of the 19th century, however, that the area’s role as a port truly took hold. The first wharf at Grande Baie was built in 1840 to allow timber to be shipped to Québec and England. It was used notably as a landing for the steamboats of the Price Brothers Company. This firm held a monopoly on the forest industry in the region. The present wharf was built in 1903. The Price Brothers establishments at Grande Baie closed permanently in 1904. The Bagotville wharf, linked to the Chicoutimi mills by a railway from 1910, grew increasingly popular. These two events led to the gradual abandonment of the Grande Baie port infrastructure. The Quai-de-Grande-Baie Heritage Site recalls the importance of port activities in the socio-economic development of Grande Baie until the early 20th century.

The heritage value of the site further lies in its landscape interest. The Grande Baie wharf extends along the shoreline of the baie des Ha! Ha!, opposite the downtown area of the Grande Baie sector. This infrastructure, whose surroundings have been redeveloped as a landscaped public park, offers interesting views of the bay and its surroundings. It is an important landmark in the landscape.
