Poitras House

The Poitras house, a classified historic monument, is a French-inspired dwelling erected around 1785. This stone residence, almost square in plan and one and a half storeys high, is topped by a straight-sloped gable roof with short eaves. The Poitras house is located in an agricultural setting, near the rivière de l’Achigan, in the municipality of L’Épiphanie.

The heritage value of the Poitras house lies in its representativeness as an example of the French-inspired rural Québec house. This type grew out of local know-how that gradually adapted the French model to the particular conditions of the country (climate, availability of materials) and opened it to certain stylistic influences. The Poitras house illustrates this type through its massive stone body, its steep straight-sloped gable roof with short eaves and no dormers, its three stone chimneys and its asymmetrical fenestration. The slope of the land, gently descending toward the river, exposes an additional storey, allowing four levels of use: the basement, the ground floor, the attic and the loft.

The heritage value of the Poitras house also lies in the integrity of its interior layout. Noteworthy are the doors and windows, the tongue-and-groove plank floors and ceilings, the built-in cupboards, the woodwork, the mouldings, the ironwork and the fireplace mantels.

Maison Poitras
