Pierre-Bidégaré House

Pierre-Bidégaré House, classified in 1967, is a Second Empire-inspired urban residence built between 1870 and 1890. The dwelling consists of a narrow, deep two-storey main building and a mansard roof, providing three habitable levels. The designation includes the residence and its lot. Pierre-Bidégaré House, which adjoins other dwellings, is located along a narrow street in the heart of the Quartier latin, in the historic district of Québec.

The heritage value of Pierre-Bidégaré House lies in its representativeness with regard to the influence of the Second Empire style on the townhouse in Québec at the end of the 19th century. This style, which was very popular in Québec in the last quarter of the 19th century, originated in French architecture under the reign of Emperor Napoleon III (1852-1870). It took as its model, notably, a wing of the Louvre palace built by architects Louis-Tullius-Joachim Visconti and Hector Lefuel between 1852 and 1857. The Second Empire style then spread to Great Britain, the United States and then Canada, where it was frequently used in public and institutional architecture. In residential architecture, it was more often combined with established traditions, and dwellings often retained only a few of its elements, such as the mansard roof. In the case of Pierre-Bidégaré House, the Second Empire influence can be recognized in the use of the mansard roof and the presence of segmental-arched openings topped with lintels of soldier-course brick.

The heritage value of Pierre-Bidégaré House also lies in its integration into a row of adjoining houses. This type of alignment dominates the urban landscape of Québec’s Quartier latin. Together with its neighbours, the property forms an ensemble with similar characteristics in terms of massing and siting. It stands out for its remarkable formal qualities.
