Peterborough Petroglyphs, Petroglyphs Provincial Park, Ontario (Anishinaabemowin
Situated on a white marble outcrop on the Canadian Shield, the Peterborough Petroglyphs form one of the largest known concentrations of pre-contact Indigenous rock carvings in Canada. Known to the Anishinaabeg (Ojibwe) as Kinoomaage Waapkong (The Teaching Rocks), several hundred images depict a wide variety of realistic animal and human forms, as well as abstract and symbolic representations. This rich petroglyphic record speaks to the cultural and spiritual life of the Algonquian-speaking peoples who carved them thousands of years ago. This site continues to be a sacred place for the Anishinaabeg.
