People of the Skeena

The Gitxsan are people of the Skeena River or River of Mist. For 10,000 years the Gitxsan have dwelled in their traditional territory and today approximately 13,000 members live in communities known as Gitwangak, Gitanyow, Gitsegukla, Hagwilget, Gitannmaax, Glen Vowell and Kispiox. The Gitxsan are a matrilineal society, where ancestry is traced through the mother’s side.

Les Gitxsans sont le peuple de la rivière Skeena, ou rivière des brumes. Depuis 10 000 ans, les Gitxsans habitent leur territoire traditionnel; aujourd’hui, environ 13 000 membres vivent dans les communautés de Gitwangak, de Gitanyow, de Gitsegukla, de Hagwilget, de Gitanmaax, de Glen Vowell et de Kispiox.
