Old Anglican Cemetery – Cow Head
The Old Anglican Cemetery is the site of a mid-nineteenth century Anglican graveyard located on Charles’ Hill at 007 Tucker’s Road, Cow Head, Newfoundland and Labrador. This cemetery is built on a hill and faces the ocean. The designation includes the gravesites and surrounding land.
The Old Anglican Cemetery has been municipally designated because it holds historic values. This cemetery is the first Anglican graveyard in Cow Head and dates back to the children of the first settlers. It contains many of the gravesites of the first settlers of Cow Head: the Paynes, Hutchings, Bennett (Benoit), Vincents, Taylors, and Hewlin families. Ancestors of many these first settlers still reside in the community. The gravesites of the settlers overlook the harbour of Cow Head as these families earned their living from the sea. As well, placing graves near the ocean is a traditional method of burial which is common in most of Newfoundland and Labrador.

L’ancien cimetière anglican est un cimetière anglican du milieu du XIXe siècle situé sur la colline Charles’ Hill, au 007, chemin Tucker’s, à Cow Head, à Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador. Ce cimetière est aménagé sur une colline et fait face à l’océan. La désignation comprend les tombes et le terrain environnant.
L’ancien cimetière anglican a été désigné par la municipalité en raison de ses valeurs historiques. Ce cimetière est le premier cimetière anglican de Cow Head et remonte à l’époque des enfants des premiers colons. Il renferme bon nombre des tombes des premiers colons de Cow Head : les familles Payne, Hutchings, Bennett (Benoit), Vincent, Taylor et Hewlin. Des ancêtres de nombre de ces premiers colons résident toujours dans la collectivité. Les tombes des colons surplombent le havre de Cow Head, car ces familles tiraient leur subsistance de la mer. De plus, placer les tombes près de l’océan est une méthode d’inhumation traditionnelle courante dans la majeure partie de Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador.
