Odilon-Bilodeau Residence
The Odilon-Bilodeau Residence, a cited historic monument, is a village house built in 1911. The dwelling, with its complex volume, is capped with a straight-pitched gable roof. It consists of a rectangular, one-and-a-half-storey main block, a projecting front section on the façade and, at the rear, two side annexes. A finely ornamented curved gallery connects the façade to the left side annex. The Odilon-Bilodeau Residence stands on a gently sloping lot framed by rows of ornamental conifers, along rue Principale in the municipality of Courcelles.
The heritage value of the Odilon-Bilodeau Residence lies in its architectural interest. The dwelling is an example of industrial vernacular architecture. This type of dwelling appeared in Québec around the middle of the 19th century and reached its peak in the early 20th century. It is found in all regions of Québec, particularly in regions of recent settlement. It is a type of house resulting from the standardization of materials and architectural components. The dissemination of models through plan catalogues from the United States also contributed to its popularity. This industrialization of housing simplified construction and made it accessible at lower cost. Although more complex in plan, the Odilon-Bilodeau Residence belongs to industrial vernacular architecture through the plan of its main block, its low-pitched, straight-pitched gable roof and its clapboard siding. The bay window, the classical millwork ornamentation and the richly ornamented gallery also bear witness to the relative prosperity of the owner-builder.
The heritage value of the house lies in its association with Uldéric Allard (1869-1954), an important figure in the history of Courcelles. The dwelling was built in 1911 for Allard. He was born in Princeville. In 1902, he established a steam sawmill near the dam. He was one of the three founders of the Compagnie de téléphone rurale de Courcelles in 1914. A prosperous and dynamic businessman, he had his home built near the dam. The house reflects a certain affluence. Allard was mayor of Courcelles from 1918 to 1921. He made several trips, including a trip to Europe in 1931, which later became the subject of a book. He left the municipality after selling his mills and settled in the Victoriaville area.
