Noyau-Institutionnel-de-Saint-Alexis-de-Grande-Baie Heritage Site

The Noyau-Institutionnel-de-Saint-Alexis-de-Grande-Baie Heritage Site, constituted in 1991, is a religious ensemble of the Catholic tradition. It comprises the Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes monument and seven buildings constructed between 1867 and 1983. Among them are the former Sainte-Marie convent, the former novitiate and juniorate, the Saint-Joseph school, the Musée du Fjord, and the Saint-Alexis church and its presbytery. The religious buildings are grouped on a large block near the baie des Ha! Ha! The Noyau-Institutionnel-de-Saint-Alexis-de-Grande-Baie Heritage Site is located near the Vieux-Grande-Baie Heritage Site (Prince-Albert sector), in the La Baie borough of the city of Saguenay.

The heritage value of the Noyau-Institutionnel-de-Saint-Alexis-de-Grande-Baie Heritage Site lies in its siting and its historical interest. It is representative of the Catholic religious ensembles that form the heart of many municipalities in Québec. These generally consist of buildings with religious and educational functions. The heritage site is located in the former village core of Grande-Baie. The first inhabitants settled along the baie des Ha! Ha! in 1838. During the second half of the 19th century, development of the institutional block began; the church and sacristy were built there, followed by the presbytery. The other religious institutions were added to the ensemble from the 1940s onward, namely two buildings belonging to the Sisters of Sainte-Marie-de-la-Présentation and a college built for the Brothers of Holy Cross. From 1983, the Musée du Fjord occupied a site facing the block, on the shore of the bay. The Foyer de la culture, the area’s cultural centre, is also located in this building. The heritage site recalls the location of the village where pioneers of the Saguenay region settled.

The heritage value of the site also lies in its architectural interest. It illustrates the evolution of architectural styles in institutional buildings over more than a century. The oldest building in the ensemble is the Saint-Alexis church, built in 1867 and 1868 by the contractor Philibert Tremblay. It bears witness to the persistence of traditional forms in Québec Catholic architecture. The church is characterized notably by a central bell tower on the roof ridge and a choir narrower than the nave. Its plan is asymmetrical owing to the addition of a chapel in 1904. The reproduction of its facade on one elevation of the sacristy is a distinctive feature. Built around 1878, the presbytery stands out for its dormers, its gallery and its mansard roof, which was innovative in the region at the time. The Sainte-Marie convent is a two-storey rectangular brick building dating from the 1940s. It features a wide covered gallery across the facade and a stepped parapet. The Saint-Joseph school adopts the forms of postwar school architecture. The function of the interior spaces thus defines its exterior appearance. The three-storey building has ribbon windows and a distinct volume for the stairwell. In the early 1960s, the congregation of the Sisters of Sainte-Marie-de-la-Présentation had a novitiate and juniorate built. Modern in style, the building is characterized by its roof formed by a series of gables, its blue metal panels and its concrete screen walls. Finally, the building housing the Musée du Fjord and the Foyer de la culture was erected in 1983. It recalls the residential architecture of the first settlers through its two-storey elevation, its hipped roof and its gables. The buildings of the heritage site bear witness to the long-term formation of the institutional core of Grande-Baie.

The heritage value of the site further lies in its association with various architects. Some of the buildings are the work of architects well known in the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region. Among them, the Chicoutimi architects Alfred Lamontagne (1883-1967) and Armand Gravel (1895-1980) designed the plans for the former Sainte-Marie convent. The latter also took part in creating the Monument des Vingt-et-Un, commemorating the first settlers who came to the region to cut timber. The Saint-Joseph school was designed by Léonce Desgagné (1908-1979) and Paul Boileau (born in 1906). As for the Musée du Fjord, it is the work of Germain Laberge (born in 1942). The heritage site thus bears witness to the contribution of important architects.
