Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel Church
The Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel Church, a cited historic monument, is a Catholic place of worship erected in 1921. The wooden church has a centralized plan with radiating chapels and a projecting choir ending in a flat chevet, and is topped by a multi-pitched roof. A rectangular sacristy extends from the choir. The façade is distinguished by its broken pediment framed by two bell towers. The Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel Church stands at an intersection, on flat ground, in the heart of the village of the municipality of Fugèreville.
The heritage value of the Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel Church lies in its architectural interest. It is an example of religious architecture from the first quarter of the 20th century. The Fugèreville church, designed by the architect Jules Caron (1886-1942), is distinguished by its monumentality, its articulated plan and its style linked to the Eastern Christian tradition. It thus includes references to late Byzantine architecture through its nearly centralized plan and its onion domes. The influence of the Italian Renaissance is also very present in the classical pilasters and the wide pediment return. Furthermore, the Sainte-Thérèse-d’Avila Cathedral in Amos, built in 1922 and 1923 to plans by Aristide Beaugrand-Champagne (1876-1950), also confirms the influence of Neo-Byzantine architecture. The Fugèreville church is an original example of early 20th-century religious architecture in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region.
The heritage value of the Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel Church also lies in its historical interest. It bears witness to the birth of the Fugèreville community. At the beginning of the 20th century, the colonization of this part of Abitibi-Témiscamingue got under way. Families settled from 1902 onward in the place that later became Fugèreville. A presbytery-chapel was built in 1910. In 1912, the Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel mission was founded, and Father Joseph-Armand Fugère was its first resident parish priest. The municipality bears his name in recognition of his pioneering role. Construction of the Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel Church began in 1921, and it was blessed the same year. The canonical erection of the parish took place in 1935. The Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel Church remains a prime witness to the history of Fugèreville.
