Notre-Dame-du-Lac-Sergent Chapel
The Notre-Dame-du-Lac-Sergent Chapel, a cited historic monument, is a place of worship of the Catholic tradition built in 1907 and 1908 and enlarged several times thereafter. This wooden chapel has a rectangular plan composed of a three-aisle nave ending in a flat chevet. Very simple, the façade includes a central porch. It is surmounted by a bell tower topping the front of the roof ridge. A second nave is set perpendicular to the first. Rectangular in plan, it rises one storey and is topped by a hip roof. The two naves form an L-shaped plan. The chapel, set on landscaped grounds, faces Lac Sergent, in the town of Lac-Sergent.
The heritage value of the Notre-Dame-du-Lac-Sergent Chapel lies in its historical and ethnological interest. It bears witness to the way of life of resort-goers in the early 20th century. These were often notables who retreated to the countryside during the summer season. There they led a more relaxed life than in the city, without, however, neglecting their religious duties. Resort-goers thus quickly provided themselves with places of worship near their summer residences. Similar Catholic or Protestant chapels are found in resort areas at the turn of the 20th century. Visits to Lac Sergent began with the construction of the railway linking Québec to Lac Saint-Jean. The first resort-goers arrived in the area as early as 1896. The area was renowned for its natural beauty. The Notre-Dame-du-Lac-Sergent Chapel was built for them in 1907 and 1908 by contractor Pierre Paquet. To meet the growing needs of the local population, the small chapel was enlarged a first time in 1913, then again in 1937 and 1944. The Notre-Dame-du-Lac-Sergent Chapel is a rare witness of early 20th-century resort life at Lac Sergent.
The heritage value of the Notre-Dame-du-Lac-Sergent Chapel also lies in its landscape interest. The chapel is set in a green setting with large mature trees. It is clearly visible from the southern part of the lake, as it stands on a small promontory. Two flights of steps lead up to the front steps of the building, which is built on a knoll. The location of the Notre-Dame-du-Lac-Sergent Chapel enhances it. It makes it a landmark as well as a very important cultural and identity site for the local population.
The heritage value of the Notre-Dame-du-Lac-Sergent Chapel further lies in its architectural interest. The building is representative of resort chapels. These are characterized by their small dimensions, their gable roof and their very simple architecture. They are most often built of wood. The Notre-Dame-du-Lac-Sergent Chapel is a good example of a resort chapel through its limited dimensions, the predominance of wood as a building material and its plain façade. It consists of a main nave to which a second, perpendicular nave is attached on the right side. A small bell tower surmounts the ridge at the front. The chapel has rabbeted board siding. The ornamentation of the Notre-Dame-du-Lac-Sergent Chapel is limited to the casings and corner boards.
Chapelle Notre-Dame-du-Lac-Sergent
