Notre-Dame-de-Grâce Chapel
The Notre-Dame-de-Grâce chapel, a classified historic monument, is a small private religious building of the Catholic tradition erected in 1867 and 1868. Gothic Revival in inspiration, this rectangular brick chapel is topped by a steep, straight-pitched gable roof. Its façade, flanked by buttresses and framed by pinnacles, features an imposing porch added in 1897. A sacristy stands against the west wall. The Notre-Dame-de-Grâce chapel is set along the road, in an agricultural setting, facing the St. Lawrence River. Built near the maison Pâquet, also a classified historic monument, it is located in the Chutes-de-la-Chaudière-Ouest borough of the city of Lévis. It benefits from a protection area.
The chapel is included in the Saint-Nicolas heritage site.
The heritage value of the chapel lies in its historical interest. The small building was built in 1867 and 1868 on the initiative of Benjamin Pâquet (1832-1900), priest, theologian, professor and administrator of the Université Laval. Its construction followed a promise made to the Virgin for the healing of his brother, Abbé Louis-Honoré Pâquet (1838-1915), who was in very fragile health. Located on the Pâquet family land, it was originally a private place of worship. A sacristy was built against the west wall in 1896 and an imposing porch was added the following year, making it possible to accommodate more of the faithful during liturgical celebrations. Near the former Ermitage Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, a summer residence erected in 1890 for Mgr Benjamin Pâquet, the chapel was used for religious purposes until the mid-20th century.
The heritage value of the chapel lies in its representativeness as a votive chapel. Linked to Catholic worship, votive chapels are a prime expression of popular religion. Dedicated to a patron saint, they serve as places of contemplation and gathering for parishioners. They are also visual landmarks and contribute to the sacralization of the Québec landscape. These chapels host religious services, notably during the procession held in the octave of the saint’s feast day. On occasion, they are used as wayside altars during processions such as those of Corpus Christi or the Rogations. The Notre-Dame-de-Grâce chapel, located near the parish church, was used in particular for pilgrimages, the parish devotions of the month of May and special events.
The heritage value of the chapel also lies in its architectural interest. The place of worship is representative of Gothic Revival architecture. Gothic Revival, a Romantic style advocating a return to medieval architecture, appeared in Canada in the early 1820s. Owing in particular to its soaring forms that lift the soul toward the heavenly Jerusalem, this style was favoured to symbolize the Christian faith, mainly in the mid-19th century. Its vocabulary was most often used for symbolic and ornamental rather than structural purposes. Erected according to the plans of Abbé Octave Audet and a certain Lapointe, the Notre-Dame-de-Grâce chapel illustrates it notably through its verticality, its pointed-arch openings and its buttresses and corner pinnacles. The porch harmonizes with it through its pointed-arch openings, its pinnacles and its ornaments. The Notre-Dame-de-Grâce chapel stands out for its elaborate architecture and the quality of its workmanship.
The heritage value of the chapel further lies in the interest of its interior. The architectural decor also illustrates the Gothic Revival influence, notably through the false rib vault with liernes and tiercerons, the wall arches, the panelling crowned by a serrated frieze adorned with spearheads, and the pointed-arch form of the niches and the door. The high altar is of artistic interest for its elaborate ornamentation drawing on the same aesthetic. The painted decor includes paintings by the Italian artist Vincenzo Pasqualoni (1819 or 1820-circa 1880), among them “Saint Michael Vanquishing Lucifer” and “Mater admirabilis”, set in frames with Gothic Revival motifs. The decor is completed by stained glass windows and by statues from Munich, attesting to the importation into Québec, in the second half of the 19th century, of religious sculpture from Germany to adorn churches. The interior decor of the Notre-Dame-de-Grâce chapel, of great stylistic unity, is remarkable given its function as a private place of worship.
