Notary’s House

The notary’s house, a cited historic monument, is a Neoclassical-inspired bourgeois residence built in 1842. This L-shaped house comprises a one-and-a-half-storey main block and an annex set at a right angle. The house has wooden clapboard and wood shingle siding and is covered by a gable roof pierced by dormers. The roof extends into a flared overhang with a curved eave that shelters a gallery running the full width of the façade. The notary’s house stands on landscaped grounds forming a natural promontory in the town of Trois-Pistoles.

The heritage value of the notary’s house lies in its association with Joseph-Hervé Rousseau (1877-1964). He made his mark on the political, social and cultural scenes of Trois-Pistoles. Rousseau trained in law at Université Laval and turned to the practice of notarial law. He settled in Trois-Pistoles, in the house that had belonged to his father and grandfather. There he continued to operate the family farm, on which he raised purebred animals and experimented with a new form of agriculture with the support of the Department of Agriculture. His notarial practice extended as far as the Côte-Nord. Alongside his profession, Notary Rousseau was involved in the cultural life of Trois-Pistoles, founding in the early 1900s the Notre-Dame-des-Neiges brass band, which he conducted for nearly sixty years. An important public figure, Notary Rousseau associated with influential political figures whom he received in his office, including Sir Wilfrid Laurier (1841-1919) and Louis Saint-Laurent (1882-1973). He himself made a brief foray into politics between 1950 and 1953, when he was elected as an independent Liberal member for the riding of Rimouski in the House of Commons. In 1961, the National Film Board (NFB) made a film about him entitled “Le notaire de Trois-Pistoles”. The notary’s house bears witness to three generations of the Rousseau family, including the notary Joseph-Hervé, who lived there from 1904 to 1964.

The heritage value of the notary’s house also lies in its architectural interest. This residence is representative of the Neoclassical-inspired Québec house. This type of dwelling, which dominated the built landscape of Québec’s countryside and villages in the 19th century, is a synthesis of the French-inspired architectural tradition of the 18th century and formal contributions of British origin, and also stems from a new way of occupying the house. Built in 1842, the notary’s house is characteristic of this type of architecture through its gable roof with flared eaves forming an overhang, its dormers, its raised foundation, its symmetrical façade, the regular arrangement of its openings and its front gallery. The residence also has curved eaves, an architectural feature common on the Côte-du-Sud, in the Bas-Saint-Laurent and in the Gaspésie.
