No. 1 Mine

Nanaimo was founded as a coal-mining settlement in 1852. Its most productive mine, No. 1, opened in 1881. From the bottom of the main shaft, one-half mile south of here, a labyrinth of workings extended for miles under the sea. These operations were served also by a shaft on Protection Island at the harbour’s entrance. Until No. 1 closed in 1938, it was the oldest operating mine in the province.

Mine no 1

Nanaimo a été fondée comme établissement houiller en 1852. Sa mine la plus productive, la no 1, a ouvert en 1881. Du fond du puits principal, à un demi-mille au sud d’ici, un labyrinthe de galeries s’étendait sur des milles sous la mer. Ces travaux étaient aussi desservis par un puits sur l’île Protection, à l’entrée du port. Jusqu’à sa fermeture en 1938, la mine no 1 était la plus ancienne mine en exploitation de la province.
