New Québec Custom House

This building, erected in 1856, to replace the former custom house, then only 25 years old, reflected Quebec’s exceptional growth as the great centre of St. Lawrence Valley timber trade and wooden ship construction. The imposing colonnade faced water stairs to the river. The rich italianate design by William Thomas, including cut stone masks and elaborate masonry dressing, matches much of his other work in Ontario and Nova Scotia, and closely resembles detail by his brother John on the town hall of Leeds, England.
