Mount Baker

The 10,778′ cone on the Washington skyline is a recent volcano. The name honours Lieut. Baker who first sighted it with Capt. Vancouver in 1792. In 1868 E.T. Coleman recorded the first ascent. Eruptions, occurring as late as 1881, left fissures from which sulphur fumes still rise. Once a mysterious, remote peak, its slopes now host skiers of the northwest.

Mont Baker

Le cône de 10 778 pieds qui se découpe à l’horizon de l’État de Washington est un volcan récent. Son nom rend hommage au lieutenant Baker, qui l’a aperçu le premier avec le capitaine Vancouver en 1792. En 1868, E.T. Coleman en a réalisé la première ascension. Des éruptions survenues jusqu’en 1881 ont laissé des fissures d’où s’échappent encore des vapeurs de soufre. Jadis un sommet mystérieux et isolé, ses pentes accueillent aujourd’hui les skieurs du Nord-Ouest.
