Moulin-Seigneurial-de-Tonnancour Historic Site

The classified Moulin-Seigneurial-de-Tonnancour historic site is an industrial complex developed from the 18th century onward. It consists of a water-powered gristmill, a classified historic monument, a sawmill and structures related to milling activity. The Tonnancour seigneurial mill is a rectangular, two-and-a-half-storey stone building topped by a steep, straight-pitched gable roof. The sawmill, which abuts the building at right angles, is a rectangular, two-and-a-half-storey building topped by a gambrel roof. Its walls are clad in horizontal boards and have numerous openings. The designation also includes the basin, the balustrade, the retaining walls, the headrace channels, the waterfall and the spillway. The whole is enhanced by landscaping. The Moulin-Seigneurial-de-Tonnancour historic site is located in the Pointe-du-Lac sector of the city of Trois-Rivières, facing lac Saint-Pierre, at the mouth of the rivière Saint-Charles.

The heritage value of the Moulin-Seigneurial-de-Tonnancour historic site lies in its historical interest. René Godefroy de Tonnancour (1669-1738), seigneur of Pointe-du-Lac (a seigneury also called Tonnancour), had a first mill built on his domain, along the rivière Saint-Charles, between 1721 and 1723. The building’s foundations were of stone, and its walls, of piece-on-piece construction, were covered with boards. A sawmill was also erected on the domain. Between 1765 and 1788, the seigneur Louis-Joseph Godefroy de Tonnancour (1712-1784), son of the former, had a new stone mill built on the site of the first mill, which was destroyed. This mill remained the property of the Godefroy de Tonnancour family until 1795, when the seigneury passed into the hands of the businessman Nicholas Montour (1756-1808), who named the domain “Woodlands.” Montour’s descendants operated the mill until 1873. During the last decades of the 19th century, the site experienced a period of great activity. New buildings were constructed, including a shingle mill, a sugar shack, a creamery and a stable. The Tonnancour seigneurial mill was then the industrial heart of Pointe-du-Lac. It also became a meeting place for villagers and the inhabitants of the surrounding countryside. In 1927, the mill and the sawmill were sold to the Frères de l’instruction chrétienne, who had been established on the former seigneurial domain since 1911. The present sawmill, built in 1949 by the brothers, is the fifth to have been built on the site. In 1962 or 1963, milling activities ceased. In 1987, the sawmill was closed. Today the site bears witness to the socio-economic life of rural Québec in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The heritage value of the Moulin-Seigneurial-de-Tonnancour historic site also lies in its architectural interest. The Tonnancour seigneurial mill and the sawmill are the two main buildings of this industrial complex. The mill is a rectangular, two-and-a-half-storey building that follows the slope of the ground. French-inspired, it has a low, massive stone body and a steep, straight-pitched gable roof. The sawmill, whose volume resembles that of a barn, abuts the mill at right angles. This rectangular, two-and-a-half-storey building is topped by a gambrel roof. Its walls are clad in horizontal boards and have numerous openings. The two buildings, which share a common wall, make the site an important witness to industrial architecture.

The heritage value of the Moulin-Seigneurial-de-Tonnancour historic site also lies in its representativeness as an industrial complex. The first sawmills were often integrated into or annexed to the gristmill, and in the 19th century, when the timber trade reached its peak, annexed sawmills were numerous. Such is the case of the one at the Moulin-Seigneurial-de-Tonnancour historic site, which used the mill’s water power. The site also includes a basin, a balustrade, retaining walls, headrace channels, a waterfall and a spillway, all of which are essential to understanding the complex.

The heritage value of the Moulin-Seigneurial-de-Tonnancour historic site also lies in its landscape interest. The grounds are landscaped and allow visitors to take in the panorama of lac Saint-Pierre. The aesthetic appeal of the site thus contributes to its renown.
