Moulin du Gouffre

The Moulin du Gouffre, classified in 1965, is a water mill built around 1828. The rectangular, two-and-a-half-storey stone building is topped by a gable roof with flared eaves. The designation also includes the lot. This flour mill is located on a tributary of the rivière du Gouffre, somewhat apart from the rang Saint-Laurent, in the municipality of Baie-Saint-Paul.

The heritage value of the Moulin du Gouffre lies in its historical interest as a witness to the seigneurial system. This mill is called “banal” because the seigneurial system obliged seigneurs to build a mill for their censitaires, who had to have their grain ground there and pay in return a milling fee, known as the right of banality. Together with the manor and the church, this establishment formed the core of the seigneury in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Moulin du Gouffre was built by Marie-Geneviève Noël (1766-1829), widow of the seigneur Joseph Drapeau (1752-1810), after the fire that destroyed the first wooden mill. Converted into a residence in the early 20th century, this flour mill, which was also used for sawing wood and fulling cloth, is now stripped of its machinery.

The heritage value of the Moulin du Gouffre also lies in its relationship with its surroundings. Built in an isolated spot on a tributary of the rivière du Gouffre, it stands on a large lot and is surrounded by abundant, mature vegetation. The mill is associated with the rolling landscapes of Baie-Saint-Paul painted by several artists in the 20th century.

The heritage value of the Moulin du Gouffre also lies in its association with the Bouchard family. Joseph Bouchard and Alda Tremblay reportedly settled at the Moulin du Gouffre in 1909. They would have 15 children, most of whom became known as folk artists. These include Simone-Mary Bouchard (1912-1995), Marie-Cécile Bouchard (1920-1973) and Joseph-Arthur Bouchard (born 1928).
