Morewood Cenotaph

This memorial was constructed in 1920, in memory of the soldiers killed in the First World War. In 1919, the Letters Patent was set up and financed by donations from the Chesterville Royal Canadian Legion Branch 434 and other groups.

The contract was signed on March 17, 1919, by J.P. Laurin, Ottawa, Manufacturers of Artistic Memorials. The granite statue, a Tait MacKenzie work, cost $3,000and was paid for by the Glasgow family, in memory of Captain E.A. Glasgow. It was dedicated on July 1, 1921.

The members of the Morewood Memorial Association and the First Directors of the Corporation were Allan Smirle, William Bouck, Albert Glasgow, Ezra Countryman, and Hector Carruthers.

Caretakers of Morewood’s Cenotaph intend to have the monument cleaned, repaired and adorned with etched-in-granite portraits of the community’s 20 fallen soldiers among other improvements. Estimated at $54,000 plus, organizers aim to have the work completed in time for the Cenotaph’s 100th anniversary celebrations on July 6, 2021. The planned portraits of the fallen soldiers, 16 from World War I and four from World War II will be etched into small granite pillars to be mounted in the area of the Cenotaph. Currently, only the portrait of Capt. E.J. Glasgow appears at the site in the form of a life-sized statue that has stood atop the Cenotaph since its unveiling by the community at the corner of Mill Street and County Rd. The existing bronze plaque listing 19 of the fallen will be cleaned, straightened out, and have added the more recently discovered missing name Private Maurice Ogden Cheney for the full complement of 20. Years of grime will be pressure-washed off the monument by professionals and areas of crumbling masonry repointed.
