Monastery of the Soeurs Adoratrices du Précieux-Sang
The monastery of the Soeurs Adoratrices du Précieux-Sang, a cited historic monument, is a conventual complex built in 1908. It is a four-level brick building whose plan takes the form of a Latin cross. An imposing chapel projects toward the street, suggesting the contemplative commitment of the cloistered nuns who had the building constructed. The built environment is fairly dense and consists of old buildings, mainly residential, in the western sector of Vieux-Lévis, in the Desjardins borough of the city of Lévis.
The heritage value of the monastery of the Soeurs Adoratrices du Précieux-Sang lies in the quality of its architecture. Although it is made of a far more modest material than stone, namely yellow brick, the chapel asserts itself with strength and prestige in a setting of detached houses. Its generous massing, the imposing bell towers capped with octagonal domes and projecting slightly from the central body, the broken pediment with scrolls, the Romanesque Revival vocabulary with its round arches, the paired openings of the belfry and, below, the blind arcading are all details that attest to the nuns’ concern to erect a building as durable as it was carefully crafted.
The heritage value of the monastery of the Soeurs Adoratrices du Précieux-Sang also lies in its representativeness of Québec conventual architecture, notably that of the early 20th century. A monastery is devoted to the spiritual and material life of a community of monks or nuns. A nun (moniale) is a woman who withdraws from the world in order to live in community or in solitude, having adopted the contemplative way of life and taken vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. This passive dimension, compared with orders active outside their own community, already distinguishes the Congregation of the Précieux-Sang from many others. The central and predominant presence of the chapel within the architectural complex and its projection toward the public space, the street, is most certainly revealing of the particular meaning of this spiritual commitment. In fact, among contemplative and cloistered congregations, architectural arrangements make each monastery representative not only of a typological milestone in the history of conventual architecture, but also of the religious life specific to the community it houses.
The heritage value of the monastery of the Soeurs Adoratrices du Précieux-Sang also lies in the characteristics of its siting in relation to the particular mission of the congregation. Founded in Saint-Hyacinthe in 1861, the congregation seems to have favoured establishing itself in towns. The Lévis monastery fits very well into the urban landscape and respects the average setbacks of the neighbouring residences. This proximity to urban activity leaves free, at the rear, an imposing lot laid out as a garden and offering an exceptional view of the St. Lawrence River and the city of Québec. The siting of the building almost on the street line hides from view a vast lot whose landscaping and views are conducive to contemplation and prayer.
The heritage value of the monastery of the Soeurs du Précieux-Sang also lies in its exemplary place within the work of the Lévis architect Lorenzo Auger (1879-1942). Auger was born in Lévis in 1879. His architectural firm also had offices there for a time. Between 1905 and 1912, nearly forty residences, shops, schools, office buildings and public buildings were designed by this talented architect. Considering that the territory of Vieux-Lévis has nearly 600 buildings of heritage interest, the importance of this architect in shaping the built landscape of Lévis is easy to understand.
