Mistiwasis (Big Child)

Mistiwasis was one of the most influential leaders of the Cree Indians and their principal spokesman at the negotiations for Treaty 6 signed in 1876. In 1885, with the support of his friend Ahtahkahkoup, he convinced many of his nation to take no part in the rebellion. This decision prevented a close alliance between the Indians and the Metis which could have led to a much more dangerous conflict. Mistiwasis continued to speak for his people among whom he had great influence until his death in 1895.
