Minnedosa Public Building
The Minnedosa Public Building was built during 1913-14 by the Dominion Government to house the Post Office, Customs House and Inland Revenue offices. This handsome structure was designed under the supervision of Dominion Architect David Ewart. The Brown Construction Company of Winnipeg served as the general contractor. Striking design makes this building a landmark in Minnedosa. Federal government use of the building ended in 1970. Two years later it was reopened as the Civic Centre.
This was the first of four nearly identical multiple-purpose federal buildings in Manitoba. The others are located at Virden, Morden and Carman. Such structures became a distinctive Canadian building type. The construction of imposing buildings gave the Canadian Government a commanding symbolic presence throughout the West.
Édifice public de Minnedosa
En 1913–1914, l’édifice public de Minnedosa a été construit par le gouvernement du Dominion qui voulait y installer des bureaux de poste, de douane et de contributions directes. Les plans de ce bel édifice ont été tracés avec l’aide de l’architecte du Dominion David Ewart. La Brown Construction Company de Winnipeg a assumé la responsabilité du choix des entrepreneurs capables d’en exécuter les travaux. C’est par son plan étonnant que ce bâtiment tient une place à part à Minnedosa. Le gouvernement fédéral a cessé d’utiliser cet édifice en 1970. Deux ans plus tard, il rouvrait ses portes et devenait le centre municipal de Minnedosa.
L’édifice public de Minnedosa était le premier de quatre bâtiments polyvalents presque identiques construits au Manitoba par le gouvernement fédéral. Les autres sont situés à Virden, Morden et Carman. Ces bâtiments ont maintenant figure d’édifices typiquement canadiens. En érigeant ces monuments imposants, le gouvernement canadien a affirmé symboliquement sa présence et son pouvoir dans les provinces de l’Ouest.
