Metlakatla

On this ancient Tsimshian site, Anglican missionary William Duncan sought to create in 1862 a self-sustaining community. New homes arose, education flourished, native crafts expanded and new trades developed. Here was built in 1874 the largest church north of San Francisco. in 1887 Duncan and many of the band moved to Alaska. Fire destroyed the church and much of the village in 1901.

Sur ce site tsimshian ancien, le missionnaire anglican William Duncan a cherché en 1862 à créer une communauté autosuffisante. De nouvelles maisons ont été construites, l’éducation a prospéré, l’artisanat autochtone s’est développé et de nouveaux métiers sont apparus. On y a construit en 1874 la plus grande église au nord de San Francisco. En 1887, Duncan et de nombreux membres de la bande sont partis en Alaska. Un incendie a détruit l’église et une grande partie du village en 1901.
