McMurray’s Post and Palliser Expedition
In 1857 William Mc Murray established a wintering post of the Hudson’s Bay Company on the North-West shore of Jackfish Lake. On December 17, 1857, Dr. James Hector, Geologist of the Palliser expedition en route to Fort Edmonton, and a party of free traders spent the night there, talking and playing on the violin. The post, comprised of a leather lodge and a storage hut, had been augmented by a two-roomed cabin when Hector returned on April 1, 1858. He found John Sullivan and James Beads of the Expedition wintering there, and on April 4 returned with them to Fort Carlton.
