Marien House
The Marien house, a cited historic monument, is a bourgeois residence built in 1919. This two-storey brick dwelling, irregular in plan, is topped by a truncated hipped roof. An avant-corps surmounted by a pediment completes the right side of the façade and a covered gallery wraps around two sides of the building. A two-storey rectangular wooden annex topped by a truncated hipped roof backs onto the rear wall of the main body. The Marien house stands on landscaped grounds, along a thoroughfare, facing the rivière de l’Achigan. It is near the institutional core and several buildings of heritage interest, in the heart of an old sector of the municipality of Saint-Roch-de-l’Achigan.
The heritage value of the Marien house lies in its historical interest. It bears witness to an important period of development in the locality. The creation of the parish of Saint-Roch-de-l’Achigan dates back to 1787, with the laying out of the seigneurial domain of Paul-Roch de Saint-Ours (1747-1814), seigneur of L’Assomption. Then, in 1845, the parish municipality was civilly erected. Several pioneer families contributed to the development of the essentially agricultural locality. Among them was the Marien family. Its members had been landowners since the early 19th century. They left their mark on the place through their presence and their contribution to the community, generation after generation. In all likelihood, it was they who had this well-appointed dwelling built in 1919, a stone’s throw from the parish church, on rue Principale. The Marien house is a prime witness to the history of Saint-Roch-de-l’Achigan and to the Marien family’s contribution to the development of the locality.
The heritage value of the Marien house also lies in its architectural interest. It is representative of bourgeois architecture of the first third of the 20th century. Several of its features reflect the social and economic status of the owners, notably its imposing volume, its complex plan and its ornamentation, much more elaborate than that of most residences of the period. The decor, inspired mainly by the classical vocabulary, consists notably of the pediment of the avant-corps, the ornate window shutters, the quoins, the string course, the brick flat arches crowning the openings, the small columns of the gallery, the flagpole and the roof cresting. Through its careful architecture and refined ornamentation, the Marien house recalls the owners’ desire to make their mark as builders as well.
The heritage value of the Marien house further lies in its importance in the landscape. The residence is located along rue Principale, in the heart of Saint-Roch-de-l’Achigan, a stone’s throw from the parish church and the cemetery. It is also near the presbytery, the convent and the J.-Oswald-Forest and Joséphat-Gareau houses, all cited historic monuments. The Marien house stands in the centre of the municipality’s old village core, on landscaped grounds near the rivière de l’Achigan. It thus enjoys increased visibility, which contributes favourably to its enhancement.
Maison Marien
