Maison d’animation sociale et culturelle

The Maison d’animation sociale et culturelle, cited as a historic monument, is a public building constructed in 1911. The large red brick building, with a two-and-a-half-storey rectangular plan, is topped by a hip roof. The main façade has a central wall dormer. The Maison d’animation sociale et culturelle is located along rue de la Fabrique, on a gently sloping lot, in the Jonquière borough of the municipality of Saguenay.

The heritage value of the Maison d’animation sociale et culturelle lies in its interest for the community. Since its construction, the building has played a major role in the social and cultural development of the town of Jonquière. The building was constructed in 1911 and served temporarily as a chapel. It was converted into a public hall after the construction of the new church of Saint-Dominique parish in Jonquière. The public (or parish) hall met several needs of the parishioners, including spaces for holding various recreational, religious or educational activities. From 1914 onward, the premises were used by various parish associations for their meetings. The ground floor included a “women’s hall” and a “men’s hall,” places for meeting and discussion on Sundays after mass. Upstairs, the building housed apartments for the staff of the parish council (fabrique). In 1927, the town’s first library opened in the women’s hall. In 1955, the public hall welcomed the students of the new Collège classique de Jonquière. They moved into their own building in 1958. In 1974, a group of some thirty people acquired the building from the municipality, renovated it and kept its vocation. A community radio station, a café-théâtre, the Centre des femmes and several social action groups moved in. The building became the Maison d’animation sociale et culturelle. It is still shared today by organizations and associations devoted notably to presenting regional artistic productions, such as the Côté-Cour café-théâtre. Since its construction, the Maison d’animation sociale et culturelle has been an important place for the development of collective projects in Jonquière.

The heritage value of the Maison d’animation sociale et culturelle also lies in its association with the architect René-Pamphile Lemay (1870-1915) and in its architectural interest. The plans of the building were designed by him. At the same time, he drew up those of Saint-Dominique Church and its presbytery, erected nearby. Lemay was an important and prolific Québec architect around the turn of the 20th century. He is well known in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region. Indeed, the new buildings of the Chicoutimi pulp mill and several upper-class residences are among his works. Lemay gave the Jonquière public hall a sober appearance, respectful of the building’s public vocation. Its ornaments are concentrated on the central wall dormer and on the crowning element formed by a moulded cornice with dentils. The unadorned architecture of the Maison d’animation sociale et culturelle reflects its community use.
