Louis-Pouliotte House

The Louis-Pouliotte House, a classified historic monument, is a French-inspired farmhouse dating back to the late 17th century. This rectangular stone dwelling, one and a half storeys high, is topped by a steep straight gable roof without overhangs. A stone dairy stands against the east gable wall. It is located within the Île-d’Orléans historic district, along chemin Royal, in the municipality of Saint-Laurent-de-l’Île-d’Orléans.

The heritage value of the Louis-Pouliotte House lies in its age. Built before the British Conquest, it was probably burned in 1759, but retains its original stone walls.

The heritage value of the Louis-Pouliotte House also lies in its representativeness as an example of the French-inspired Québec house, common on Île d’Orléans. This type is characterized by a low main body set close to the ground and a steep roof with straight slopes and no overhangs. In the case of the Louis-Pouliotte House, the main body is of stone and the gable roof is covered with cedar shingles. The south-facing orientation of the façade, as well as the presence of an exterior dairy against the northeast side of the building and a bread oven built into the hearth, are also characteristic of rural dwellings of this period. The farm dairy is a small building with thick walls of stone or of stacked-plank construction where milk is processed and stored. It was preferably located in a cool spot, often northeast of the dwelling. In rural areas, the bread oven was built outdoors or indoors, where it was usually integrated into the hearth. These two architectural elements bear witness to domestic skills that have since been abandoned.

Maison Louis-Pouliotte
