Lévis Forts

Three forts were built near this site between 1865 and 1871 in response to the border tensions during the American Civil War. As a strategic part of Québec’s fortification system, they were to defend the city and its harbour from a possible invasion from Maine. Never completely armed or garrisoned, they were virtually abandoned following the signing of the Treaty of Washington by Great Britain and the United States in 1871. The design of the three forts, of which only Fort No. 1 remains, illustrates a transition from the principles of classical fortification to the military practices of the mid-nineteenth century.
