L’Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site

The remains of an 11th-century Norse settlement, the earliest known evidence of Europeans in North America. Excavations in the 1960s uncovered the outlines of timber-framed turf buildings, and reconstructions now stand near the original site.

Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1978 (cultural site).
