L’Anglicane

L’Anglicane, a cited historic monument, is a former Episcopalian church of Gothic Revival inspiration built from 1848 onward. This rectangular stone building with a flat east end is covered by a straight-pitched roof surmounted by a bell tower. Next to a park, the building is located in a dense, residential urban setting made up of many buildings of heritage interest. L’Anglicane is located at the heart of Vieux-Lévis, in the Desjardins borough of the city of Lévis. A known archaeological site is associated with the place.

The heritage value of L’Anglicane lies in its age. This church is among the oldest buildings in Vieux-Lévis. Most of the 600 buildings of heritage interest in this sector postdate the church, having mainly been erected during the second half of the 19th century. Several buildings predating 1850 have been demolished or destroyed by fire. Buildings as old as L’Anglicane are therefore few in Vieux-Lévis.

The heritage value of L’Anglicane also lies in its architectural interest. This building is the work of Edward Staveley (1795-1872), a renowned architect trained in England. The pointed-arch openings, the triangular roof vents, the angle buttresses, the archivolt and pilasters of the door, as well as the rubblestone walls and cut-stone decorative components, are all features that make L’Anglicane a building representative of Gothic Revival architecture of the first half of the 19th century in Québec. This former place of worship has retained several of its original features.

The heritage value of L’Anglicane also lies in its historical interest. The church, formerly named Holy Trinity, bears witness to the establishment of the Anglican community in Lévis from 1820 onward and to its continuity. In Vieux-Lévis, only one other place of worship bears witness to the past presence of communities of faiths other than Catholic, namely the former Presbyterian church located on rue Marie-Rollet. L’Anglicane nevertheless remains the only such building retaining a public function.

L'Anglicane
