James Boyle Uniacke
Born in Halifax and educated in law, Uniacke represented Cape Breton in the Nova Scotia assembly and became Tory Leader. Appointed to the Council of Twelve in 1838 he resigned in 1840 having become a staunch advocate of Responsible Government. Later that year, together with Joseph Howe, he re-entered the Executive, but again resigned in 1843 on a fundamental issue touching the reform movement. When, in 1848, the battle for Responsible Government was won, Uniacke formed the first ministry and continued as Premier and President of the Council until 1854. Retiring from politics, he became Commissioner of Crown Lands. He died at Halifax.
