Îlette-au-Pé

The Îlette-au-Pé, a constituted heritage site, is a vacation retreat laid out in 1957. It consists of a small island on which stands a cottage; a wooden footbridge connects the island to its neighbour. The one-storey, L-shaped wooden cottage, built on piles, is topped by a low-pitched gable roof. It has a veranda across the front. The island has several mature trees. The Îlette-au-Pé is located in the Sorel Islands archipelago, in the municipality of Sainte-Anne-de-Sorel.

The heritage value of the Îlette-au-Pé lies in its association with Germaine Guèvremont (1893-1968), who frequented the Îlette-au-Pé from 1920. In 1957 she had a cottage built on this small deserted island, one of the 103 making up the Sorel Islands archipelago. Germaine Grignon was born in Saint-Jérôme but grew up in Sainte-Scholastique in a milieu where literature held an important place. Her studies took her to Toronto, where she learned English and piano. She then returned to Sainte-Scholastique and worked occasionally at the courthouse and for visiting lawyers. In 1916 she married Hyacinthe Guèvremont, a native of Sorel, and the couple settled in Ottawa. In 1920 the Guèvremont family settled in Sorel. While raising her four children, Germaine Guèvremont became a journalist for the newspapers “The Gazette” of Montréal and the “Courrier de Sorel.” In 1935 the family moved to Montréal. From 1938, Germaine Guèvremont contributed to the magazine “Paysanna,” edited by Françoise Gaudet-Smet. There she wrote stories, many of them set against the backdrop of the Sorel Islands. Most of these were published in the collection “En pleine terre” in 1942. This woman of letters’ first novel, “Le Survenant,” was published in 1945. The story is set in the early 1910s. It describes the stay of a stranger with a farming family on the chenal du Moine at Sainte-Anne-de-Sorel. The book, published in Montréal and Paris, was an immediate success and won prizes in Québec and France. Radio-Canada broadcast a radio adaptation of the novel as early as 1947. The author then wrote a sequel entitled “Marie-Didace.” It was, however, the novelist’s television adaptation of these two works that did most to make her famous. From 1954 to 1960, the series “Le Survenant” and “Marie-Didace” decisively marked the beginnings of Québec television. In the collective memory, the name of Germaine Guèvremont remains forever associated with the landscape of the Sorel Islands.

The heritage value of the Îlette-au-Pé further lies in its historical interest. Alfred Guèvremont (1855-1935), a notary and the writer’s father-in-law, acquired a small island in Sainte-Anne-de-Sorel in 1911. He let his horse graze there when he went to his hunting and fishing camp on the neighbouring island, the île aux Fantômes. Its previous owner, Olivier Paul, named the island with his initials, “O.P.” On his father’s death, Germaine Guèvremont’s husband inherited the island. She renamed the place “Îlette-au-Pé.” In 1957 the novelist wished to have a summer house built on this deserted islet. She liked to go there to meditate, write and hunt; her husband, however, disagreed. She then decided to use her personal funds, thereby overstepping the law. The Civil Code of Québec of the time gave the husband all legal rights. Without her husband’s authorization, a wife could not buy, make or accept a gift, engage in trade, bring legal action, enter into contracts or administer her movable and immovable property. This situation changed only after the amendment of the Civil Code of Québec in 1964. Germaine Guèvremont’s cottage is probably the first house built by a Québec woman with her royalties.

The heritage value of the Îlette-au-Pé lastly lies in its architectural interest. Germaine Guèvremont’s cottage is representative of the small vacation buildings of the mid-20th century. It is characteristic of them in its dimensions and its plain wooden architecture. The cottage nevertheless stands out from others because it is built on piles. This type of construction is typical of flood-prone areas, of which there are several on the Sorel Islands.
