Île-aux-Grues Seigneurial Domain
The Île-aux-Grues Seigneurial Domain, classified as a historic site, is a complex consisting of a manor – a T-shaped residence whose oldest parts date back to 1769 – and outbuildings built in the 19th century. All the buildings are of wood and covered with cedar-shingled gable roofs. The domain is located at the southeast tip of the island, away from the village core of the municipality of Saint-Antoine-de-l’Isle-aux-Grues. It includes a known archaeological site.
The heritage value of the Île-aux-Grues Seigneurial Domain lies in its representativeness as a witness to the seigneurial system. The heart of the seigneurial domain is the manor, which is generally only a house larger than the other dwellings and which serves as both the seigneur’s residence and office. Around it there were usually various buildings necessary for the seigneur’s subsistence. The Île-aux-Grues Seigneurial Domain is a good example of this type of complex through its spacious residence, its outbuildings – notably a bakehouse, a barn and a hunting lodge -, its vast grounds and the still-visible traces of a garden laid out in the spirit of the Picturesque movement, which reflect the social status of its owners.
The heritage value of the Île-aux-Grues Seigneurial Domain also lies in the architectural interest of the manor. The former seigneurial residence reveals the various stages of its construction and the associated changes in use. The central block, which dates from 1769, is a modest piece-on-piece building that served mainly as the seigneur’s office, since he went there only in the autumn to collect the cens et rentes and to hunt. The domain was sold in 1802 to Daniel MacPherson, and the new owner, who lived there year-round with his family, built a first extension on the east side. In the mid-19th century, under the influence of Neoclassicism, a second extension was added to the first in order to unify the building, and the roof was given curved eaves and a false chimney stack on the west side. The most significant work was carried out in 1873. The manor, converted into a summer residence, was renovated and enlarged once again, while the grounds were landscaped in the spirit of the Picturesque movement. Inside, partitions were moved and new ornamental elements were added. Outside, lean-tos were built on the east and west, the old bakehouse was connected to the manor by the construction of a wing to the north, and the southeast façade was given a gallery-veranda to allow the occupants to enjoy the panorama.
The heritage value of the Île-aux-Grues Seigneurial Domain also lies in its association with a figure of great renown for Québec, the lawyer, historian and writer James MacPherson Le Moine (1825-1912). The author of several historical works, his best-known books are those dealing with the city and suburbs of Québec, including “Picturesque Québec : A Sequel to Quebec Past and Present,” published in 1882. MacPherson Le Moine also wrote on Canadian fauna and flora. The man of law and letters spent part of his childhood on the domain, for on the death of his mother, in 1828, he was entrusted to his maternal grandparents, who owned it. During his college studies, which he pursued in Québec, he also spent his holidays there. He inherited it in 1873 and used it as a summer residence. It should also be mentioned that the domain belonged, until his death, to the celebrated painter Jean-Paul Riopelle (1923-2002).
The heritage value of the Île-aux-Grues Seigneurial Domain further lies in its integration into the environment. The layout of the buildings, aligned on an east-west axis along the river, and the surviving remains of the major landscaping carried out at the end of the 19th century in the spirit of the Picturesque movement express a desire to harmonize architecture and nature. Located south of the eastern tip of the island, this domain is an enchanting site, with the presence of the river, its vast grounds planted with tall trees of various species and its flower beds.
