Huron Tract
The Huron Tract, over 1,000,000 acres in extent, was opened to colonization by the Canada Company between 1826 and 1843. Under the influence of American experiences, Goderich was established in 1827 as an urban center for the settlement of the region. Limited services were provided for the immigrants and a road network was laid out to open the interior and connect the tract with other settlements. The 1840s brought rapid development, a result both of general immigration trends and new Company leasing policy. By 1860 the tract had two flourishing towns, Goderich and Stratford, and agriculture had evolved beyond the pioneer stage.
Huron Tract
