Hungerford Street
This street is named in memory of Captain George Crossley Hungerford.

George Crossley Hungerford was raised on Wellington Street in London ON. He attended Central Collegiate followed by St. Andrew’s College in Aurora ON from 1933 to 1935. He served in the militia with the Canadian Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) as well as the 48th Highlanders, before being called to active service in September 1939. In early March 1940 he joined the Royal Canadian Regiment at Wolseley Barracks in London ON and sailed for England soon after. Once in the UK, he was assigned to instructional duties. In March 1944, he rejoined his Regiment at Ortona and was appointed Officer Commanding D Company, Royal Canadian Regiment. Captain George C. Hungerford was killed by shell fire on 17 September 1944 during the battle for the Rimini airfield as part of OPERATION OLIVE, the main Allied offensive on the Gothic Line. He is buried at Coriano Ridge War Cemetery.

George Crossley Hungerford grandit sur la rue Wellington à London (Ontario). Il fréquente le Central Collegiate, puis le collège St Andrew’s à Aurora, en Ontario, de 1933 à 1935. Puis, il sert dans la milice dans les Fusiliers canadiens (régiment de la ville de London) avant de joindre le 48e Highlanders et d’être appelé sous les armes en septembre 1939. Au début de mars 1940, il rejoint le Royal Canadian Regiment à Wolseley Barracks à London, en Ontario, et navigue vers l’Angleterre peu après. Une fois au Royaume-Uni, il est affecté à des tâches de formation. En mars 1944, il rejoint son régiment à Ortona et est nommé commandant de la Compagnie D, Royal Canadian Regiment. Le capitaine George C. Hungerford a été tué par un tir d’obus le 17 septembre 1944 lors de la bataille pour la prise du terrain d’aviation Rimini dans le cadre de l’OPÉRATION OLIVE, la principale offensive alliée sur la ligne gothique. Il est inhumé dans le cimetière de guerre Coriano Ridge.
