Havre-aux-Maisons Presbytery

The presbytery of Havre-aux-Maisons, a cited historic monument, is a priest’s residence built in the 1920s. The T-plan building rises two and a half storeys and is topped with a hipped roof with pediments. The exterior walls are clad in cedar shingles. The presbytery faces the sea, near the old convent, a cited historic monument. It stands in the village core of Havre-aux-Maisons, in the municipality of Îles-de-la-Madeleine.

The heritage value of the presbytery of Havre-aux-Maisons lies in its architectural interest. The presbytery has a T-shaped plan. It forms an articulated volume with ornamental elements that give it character. A polygonal turret containing the main entrance, at the angle of the two wings, lends a picturesque touch to the composition, recalling the Queen Anne Revival style. A large central dormer and pediments punctuate the roofs. On the walls, the cedar-shingle cladding forms a slight curved flare at the junction of the two storeys, marked by a band in a contrasting colour. The sash windows, framed by casings, complete the composition of the presbytery. Its sober, light ornamentation sets it apart from the other buildings of Havre-aux-Maisons.

The heritage value of the presbytery of Havre-aux-Maisons also lies in its historical interest. Located very close to the old convent, the building is part of the former Catholic institutional ensemble of the village of Havre-aux-Maisons. At the time of its founding, the parish of Sainte-Madeleine-du-Havre-aux-Maisons served the entire eastern part of the archipelago. Near the bay, a small chapel was built as early as 1823. It was replaced in 1898 by a large wooden church that was destroyed by fire in 1973. The presbytery, located near the old convent and the church site, is an important witness to the existence of the parish.
