Hall Block
The Hall Block is a two story Edwardian style building on the main street of Nanaimo’s downtown core. The historic place is confined to the building footprint.
The Hall Block is significant because of its association with Dr. G.A.B. Hall. Dr. Hall was the longtime physician and surgeon to the Western Fuel Company miners and had a lengthy history of community service, including a term as Mayor from 1930-31. Hall represents the intrinsic connections between doctors, coal companies and the coal mining population. In a city with exceptionally high accident and death rates, these connections were especially significant.
Built in 1925, the Hall Block is a simple, symmetrical and well-proportioned example of an inter-war period building in a vernacular Edwardian style. With only minor alterations, the Hall Block maintains much of its original character.
Situated in the middle of one city block of largely intact and similarly scaled buildings, the Hall Block is an integral part of the west Commercial Street streetscape.
Édifice Hall
L’édifice Hall est un bâtiment de deux étages de style édouardien situé sur la rue principale du centre-ville de Nanaimo. Le lieu patrimonial se limite à l’empreinte au sol du bâtiment.
L’édifice Hall est important en raison de son association avec le Dr G.A.B. Hall. Le Dr Hall a longtemps été médecin et chirurgien des mineurs de la Western Fuel Company et a œuvré longuement au service de la collectivité, notamment à titre de maire de 1930 à 1931. Hall incarne les liens intrinsèques entre les médecins, les sociétés houillères et la population minière. Dans une ville où les taux d’accidents et de décès étaient exceptionnellement élevés, ces liens revêtaient une importance particulière.
Construit en 1925, l’édifice Hall est un exemple simple, symétrique et bien proportionné de bâtiment de l’entre-deux-guerres de style édouardien vernaculaire. N’ayant subi que des modifications mineures, l’édifice Hall conserve une grande partie de son caractère d’origine.
Situé au milieu d’un pâté de maisons formé de bâtiments en grande partie intacts et d’échelle semblable, l’édifice Hall fait partie intégrante du paysage de rue de l’ouest de la rue Commercial.
