Grace Annie Lockhart

Grace Annie Lockhart was the first woman to earn a university degree in the British Empire. Founded exclusively for the education of men universities in the 19th century gradually began opening their doors to women. Mount Allison College became co-educational in 1872. This change built on the pioneering commitment to female education of the associated Mount Allison Ladies’ Academy and of denominational schools in the United States. Lockhart, a student at the Ladies’ Academy, took courses at the College, formally enrolled in 1874 and graduated with a degree of Bachelor of Science and English Literature on 25 May 1875.

Grace Annie Lockhart
